The Vivey Awards: Best of HTC Vive 2016 – The Results Are In

We had a blast wrapping up the year with the help of the VR community, looking back through 2016 to vote on our most beloved and standout games and experiences. This gives us a chance to recognize and acknowledge the hard work of VR developers, to give us all some fun breaks from reality and further push Virtual Reality forward as a whole.

It was a pretty straight-forward voting process. We created 12 categories, 3 of which were the main awards, via PollDaddy. We selected 3 titles randomly based off popularity for clickable votes and included an “Other” option and encouraged everyone to write in ANY of their favorite titles. Voting was left open for most of December 2016. We thank greatly, everyone who contributed and voted. Without you, this would not be possible!

The 3 main categories are:

Best HTC Vive Game 2016

Best HTC Vive Experience 2016

Best HTC Vive Application 2016

The 9 sub-categories are:

Best HTC Vive Arcade Game 2016

Best HTC Vive FPS Game 2016

Best HTC Vive Multiplayer 2016

Best HTC Vive Sport Game 2016

Best HTC Vive Puzzle Game 2016

Best HTC Vive Social Experience 2016

Best HTC Vive Free Experience 2016

Best HTC Vive Accessory 2016

Best HTC Vive Youtuber 2016

Now, without further ado, the winners of the Vivey Awards 2016!

Starting off the fun with the 3 main categories, let’s get to the main event:

Best HTC Vive Game 2016

We were expecting this would take the title, as it well deserves it. Acting as mostly everyone’s initial glimpse into VR, when they first set up their Vive and put on their first game, and as one of the highest quality VR titles currently available: The Lab by Valve

Welcome to The Lab, a compilation of Valve’s room-scale VR experiments set in a pocket universe within Aperture Science. Fix a robot, defend a castle, adopt a mechanical dog, and more. Still not sold? It’s free!

The Lab available on Steam at $0.00.

Best HTC Vive Experience 2016

When this title first launched not too long ago, it was like we were given the power of a god: to see the entire planet and scale and zoom in and look and go anywhere! We figured this would get the title and we are happy to confirm, the Best HTC Vive Experience of 2016 is: Google Earth VR

Google Earth VR lets you explore the world from totally new perspectives in virtual reality. Stroll the streets of Tokyo, soar over the Grand Canyon, or walk around the Eiffel Tower.

Download Google Earth VR for free on Steam.

Best HTC Vive Application 2016

The next winner is truly a triumph of artistic software as a whole. It had quite literally made artists’ dreams come true, by allowing you to create 3d art, freely, in virtual reality. With consistent updates and implementation of community requests, Google has created the best VR drawing app currently available: Tilt Brush

Tilt Brush lets you paint in 3D space with virtual reality. Unleash your creativity with three-dimensional brush strokes, stars, light, and even fire. Your room is your canvas. Your palette is your imagination. The possibilities are endless.

Grab Tilt Brush on Steam at $29.99.

Best HTC Vive Arcade Game 2016

For best Arcade game, there was certainly a great deal to choose from. Regardless of all the options, this title ran away with the votes right out of the gates. I would agree that this title reflects the arcade gameplay, feel and style of the classics. When it last updated and added in a slew of power-ups, a new weapon or two  and further fine-tuned the gameplay, it solidified itself as the first great VR Arcade classic: Space Pirate Trainer

Space Pirate Trainer is the official trainer for wannabe space pirates on the HTC Vive. Pick up your blasters, put on your sneakers, and dance your way into the Space Pirate Trainer hall of fame.

Space Pirate Trainer is available on Steam at $14.99.

Best HTC Vive FPS Game 2016

We wanted to give the more single player/campaign style of First Person Shooter games their own category as this does not necessarily address multiplayer and is really about “what shooter did you have the most fun with or just plain enjoy the most?” This title easily overtook the polls and is without a doubt, according to the ViveReport readers is the Best HTC Vive FPS Game of 2016: Arizona Sunshine

Step in the midst of a zombie apocalypse as if you were really there, freely move around and explore a post-apocalyptic world, and handle motion-controlled weapons with real-life movements – putting the undead back to rest is more thrilling and satisfying than ever before.

Get Arizona Sunshine on Steam at $39.99.

Best HTC Vive Multiplayer 2016

This is a title we kept seeing in almost every category. It has developed a die-hard user base since its release, thanks to the developer’s frequent updates and great relationship with their player base. Recently, the developer (a one-man show for the most part) Dante, has officially been invited by Valve to come to their offices and work on this title under their tutelage. I think we all knew this would easily take the title of Best HTC Vive Multiplayer 2016: Onward

Onward is a Mil-Sim paced tactical multiplayer shooter, being developed for virtual reality head mounted displays. Players will use coordination, communication, and marksmanship skill to complete objectives in online infantry combat.

Onward is available for $24.99 on Steam.

Best HTC Vive Sport Game 2016

I was slightly concerned this would happen, and of course it would happen with two games that I feel really exemplify the benefits of roomscale VR. Now, I want to clarify that I did not vote in any of the categories and I am now glad that I didn’t as it would’ve been quite difficult choosing between these as I truly play both titles regularly, easily a few times a week. They are both my top go-to’s for some good fun and some good exercise. Best HTC Vive Sport Game 2016 is a dead-even tie between: Holoball & Thrill of the Fight

HoloBall plunges players into an action-sports arcade arena inspired by one of the most iconic games of all time. Use your paddles to hit, smash and curve the HoloBall past your opponent to score. Learn and master skillshots to outmatch your increasingly difficult opponents.

Holoball,  $14.99 on Steam.

The Thrill of the Fight – Face-off in the virtual ring in this grueling boxing game. Jab, dodge, and sweat your way to the top of the boxing world. Grab your gloves, step through the ropes, and become a champion.

Get The Thrill of the Fight on Steam, $9.99.

Best HTC Vive Puzzle Game 2016

For our puzzle category, there was a bit less interest from the public, but that doesn’t mean this title didn’t destroy the competition. This game in particular enveloped the bulk of my wife’s playtime when we first got the Vive, and is really a shining example of what VR brings to the table in terms of interactivity. This title brings to life something most of us played in one form or another when we were children. It really blew us away when we first got it and clearly left a huge impression on the community. Best HTC Vive Puzzle Game 2016: Final Approach

Take control of the skies like never before in a full Virtual Reality world! Airplanes on fire, commuter aircraft low on fuel, mid-air collisions, emergency helicopter rescues, military exercises and so much more!

Final Approach on Steam available for $14.99.

Best HTC Vive Social Experience 2016

There have already been a great deal of social applications released for VR. Some focus on communication, or on interactions or a shared space between multiple parties. This title did a fantastic job integrating a bit from all of the columns, to create one of the most beloved social games out there. They’ve created not just a game, but a community within a game. They’ve listened to feedback and worked tirelessly to create a fantastic experience that allows you to custom tailor your appearance allowing you free expression in how you appear to others, for the most part. Allowing you to then interact and play fun, active mini-games with people from all around the world. They’ve created a top notch VR social club and somehow they’ve made it available for free. Best HTC Vive Social Experience 2016: Rec Room

Welcome to Rec Room, the virtual reality social club where you play active games with players from all around the world. Hang out in the locker room, customize your appearance, then party up with friends new and old to play games like Paintball, Dodgeball, 3D Charades, Disc Golf and much more!

Get Rec Room for free on Steam.

Best HTC Vive Free Experience 2016

Unsurprisingly, another win for the modern-day masterpiece: Google Earth VR

Google Earth VR lets you explore the world from totally new perspectives in virtual reality. Stroll the streets of Tokyo, soar over the Grand Canyon, or walk around the Eiffel Tower.

Get it here.

Best HTC Vive Accessory 2016

It’s funny now thinking of this category, with all the announcements coming from CES 2017. Thinking about the few available accessories from 2016, now jumping into an abundance of awesome accessories that are coming our way throughout 2017. Wireless VR through TPCast, Deluxe Audio Headstrap, Vive Tracker and tracked accessories, this category in 2017 is going to be an exciting one, but for 2016 the best HTC Vive Accessory, as voted by the community is: VRCovers

VRCovers are foam inserts, made in a variety of materials, which replace the stock foam inserts that ship with the HTC Vive.

Best HTC Vive Youtuber 2016

Capping off the awards with an important, but often overlooked category, “Best Youtuber.” We mostly received “Other” votes for tons of different youtubers, all doing a great service to us, the gamers, by putting in the work to record their gameplay and share their thoughts, maybe sometimes a little too over the top, but hey it’s YouTube after all. As voted by the community, best Vive Youtuber of 2016 is: Nathie

Check out Nathie in action over at his channel.

Thanks, everybody!

One last gigantic THANK YOU! to everyone who participated and voted. To the devs and their tireless development hours and finicky fine tuning. To the wonderful people at HTC Vive and especially the people at Valve. We’ve had an awesome 2016, giving away over $1000 in Steam Giveaways through our Weekly Monday Steam Giveaways and meeting so many awesome people from the VR community, even attending a hackathon at MIT! We thank you all and eagerly look to 2017 and the promise of bigger and better and even, possibly, the illustrious AAA.

That’s it folks! And with that we say farewell to 2016, so long and thanks for all the VR!
